Chiropractors and the US Military

Just the Facts (with a little opinion)

New Pollitical Action

It’s not commissioning, but perhaps a step closer.  With the ultimate goal being to get our troops the care they need; Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL) recently introduced H.R. 484, an ACA-backed bill designed to extend chiropractic health parity to U.S. military retirees, dependents and survivors through the Defense Department’s TRICARE program.  Go here to take action.

On the veterans front some exciting news is happening.  The current bill to expand Chiropractic to the full VA has passed the house, but needs your support to pass the Senate.  To take action on this one click here.  One person cannot accomplish this alone, but it can’t be accomplished unless one person acts.  Contact your Senator and tell them to support S. 1204.

  1. anything new along this front? I am a student at Parker in Dallas. i have 2 trimesters left. Last Fall General Becky Halstead US army came and talked with our school, she is a big advocate of Chiropractic. I asked her how long it might be before we see commissioning of Chiropractors. She estimated 10-15 yrs as a result of being in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now that Iraq is supposedly over maybe that timeline has shrunk?

    • As you can imagine in an election year, many promises are flying, but not much action is happening. The latest news is that the Army and Air Force have changed chiropractors from contract to GS employees. That is a step in the right direction. The commissioning of chiropractors can happen in an instant if the right person says so, but the timeline you give is probably accurate. I would guess 10-15 years. The difficulty is that the military only has money and spots for a certain number of health care employees. In order for chiropractors to get one of those slots another doctor would have to loose their spot. You can imagine how tricky that might be. Without creating a new allocation for chiropractors specifically it is complicated, and to create that is costly and complicated of it’s own right. I can only imagine how much it would cost to employ and staff 100-200 chiropractic facilities. Keep up the encouragement, we may not work for ourselves, but for the future.
